A recent survey found that 53% of Michigan residents who are likely to vote this fall would say yes to legalizing and taxing marijuana. Supporters of legalizing the drug say that this number is of no surprise to them.
Support for the legalization of marijuana has continued to increase over the years in Michigan at a rate of at least 2% per year. These numbers are also accounting for a number of people who do not feel comfortable admitting their preference on marijuana legalization to a pollster.
This ballot proposal would allow residents of Michigan 21 years of age or older to grow, possess and sell marijuana, let state and governments pass regulations and impose up to a 10% tax on non-medical pot with funding earmarked for education, road repairs and local governments.
The ballot would also go into more depth regarding exactly how much a person can grow, possess or sell, and would be similar to many states already undergoing this law.
Aside from strictly marijuana, this ballot is proposing to legalize the statewide cultivation of industrial hemp, a crop that once supplied the raw materials for textile and rope, but is also related to marijuana.
